I was examining my collection of 'songs-for-the-broken-hearted;'
looking for The Ultimate Tear-Jerker noticed some common themes:
1) You got dumped
2) You dumped but later regretted it
3) You blew it (i.e., you deserved to get dumped)
4) You were both victims of circumstance (star-crossed?)
5) You loved in vain unrequitedly
6) You loved in vain but secretly
I was learning "You Don't Know Me" (category #6) and a line in The
Band's "It Makes No Difference" came to mind: 'There's no love as
true as the love that dies untold' (Clearly my category #6, right?)
Coincidentally I was listening to one of my favorite old JD Souther
tunes: "Silver Blue" (category #3) He cranked out a lot of those
heartbreakers. Hard to top "Love Has No Pride" imho, but not sure how
to categorize it in my scheme. Some ambiguity there (category 1, 2 or
3?). I love that tune, though. In my Top 5 Tearjerkers for sure.
But .... Ronstadt cover a tune called "Shattered" that imo might very
well be The Ultimate Tear-Jerker, but its completely generic --- like
an existential crisis set to music.
So any good tear jerkers come to mind? Anyone wnat to help with my
typology?
