Discussion:
Tear-Jerker Typology
(too old to reply)

I was examining my collection of 'songs-for-the-broken-hearted;'
looking for The Ultimate Tear-Jerker noticed some common themes:

1) You got dumped
2) You dumped but later regretted it
3) You blew it (i.e., you deserved to get dumped)
4) You were both victims of circumstance (star-crossed?)
5) You loved in vain unrequitedly
6) You loved in vain but secretly

I was learning "You Don't Know Me" (category #6) and a line in The
Band's "It Makes No Difference" came to mind: 'There's no love as
true as the love that dies untold' (Clearly my category #6, right?)

Coincidentally I was listening to one of my favorite old JD Souther
tunes: "Silver Blue" (category #3) He cranked out a lot of those
heartbreakers. Hard to top "Love Has No Pride" imho, but not sure how
to categorize it in my scheme. Some ambiguity there (category 1, 2 or
3?). I love that tune, though. In my Top 5 Tearjerkers for sure.

But .... Ronstadt cover a tune called "Shattered" that imo might very
well be The Ultimate Tear-Jerker, but its completely generic --- like
an existential crisis set to music.

So any good tear jerkers come to mind? Anyone wnat to help with my
typology?

I like What'll I Do by Berlin.

There's also You Broke My Heart So I Broke Your Jaw.

You Don't Know Me is one of my favorite songs. If I could sing I would
work it up. Emmylou does a nice version.

Yeah, that's a killer tune, all right. I can only play a half-assed
version like below. Sure wish I could jazz it up a little bit
====================

You Don't Know Me

C C7
You give your hand to me and then you say hello
F F#dim
And I can hardly speak, my heart is beating so
C A7 Dm
And anyone could tell you think you know me well
G7 E7 A7 Dm7 G7
but you don't know me

No you don't know the one who dreams of you at night
And longs to kiss your lips and longs to hold you tight
I'm just a friend that's all I've ever been
But you don't know me

F Cdim Cmaj7
For I never knew the art of making love
Dm7 G7 C
Though my heart aches with love for you
Am7 Em
Afraid and shy I let my chance go by
D7 G7
The chance that you might love me too

You give your hand to me and then you say goodbye
I watch you walk away and in my heart I cry
To never never know the one who loves you so
cause you don't know me

My work is crazy right now, but if I can get some time I'll play around
with working up an arrangement for the piece. I think I have a Word file
of the lyrics and chords for What'll I do on my home computer. I'll send
it when I get home...

It's definitely an overkill for accompanying yourself singing the piece,
but it can give you an idea of leading chords in order to break up the
monotony of strumming a C chord for four beats...

I don't think I've ever had any luck with that guy. Not just this
song but other things I've looked at just seem plainly wrong to me.
But, to be fair, I am absolutely terrible at following chord-melody
arrangements --- without the lyrics I can never guess the meter or
what goes where. I probably just don't jknow what he means half the
time.

On that particular tune, I've worked out how to play it with the
indicated chords. I think some of the time, his chord symbols don't
line up with the lyrics the way they're supposed to.

Life can get complicated!

Jesse Winchester's "No Pride at All" has the You-Don't-Know-Me theme.

Love Has No Pride has the line "only myself to blame' so no ambiguity,
I guess. Dumped deservedly.

I was examining my collection of 'songs-for-the-broken-hearted;'
Anyone wnat to help with my
typology?

7) I didn't get dumped and later regretted it?
"Fennario" comes to mind.

You could add "Careless love" to category 7.

Tom Paxton's "Last thing on my mind" is a favourite of mine in category 3.
No kidding, I could make the girls go all dewy-eyed with that one, even
though I can't sing.

Sherm.

Most of my songs come into one or other of your categories, If I was
female I'd be a "Torch Singer".

Here are a few.

No One Ever Tells You
In The Wee Small Hours
Manha De Carnival
Here's That Rainy Day
Angel Eyes
Ill Wind
What's New
Solitaire
Round Midnight
We Three
Crazy
Good Morning Heart Ache

There are lots more.

I think about the saddest song I've ever heard is "Whiskey Lullaby" by
Alison Krauss and Brad Paisley. And the video they did for the song
will tear your heart out.

"She put him out
Like the burning end of a midnight cigarette.

She broke his heart
He spent his while life trying to forget.

We watched him drink his pain away a little at at time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind
Until the night.

He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger.
And finally drank away her memory.
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees.

We found him with his face down in the pillow
And a note that said I'll love her till I die
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The Angels sang a whiskey lullaby "

"The Rumors flew
But nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years
She tried to hide the whiskey on her breath

She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind
until the night.

She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees.

We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
while the angels sang a whiskey lullaby"

"Love Has No Pride": category: doormat.
Agree it's a great tearjerker (I love Ronstadt's cover), but basically
it says "I'll forego my self-esteem and any remaining self-respect to be
with you".

Okey dokey. And here, by BB King

Never Make A Move Too Soon

Three days of snow in Birmingham
Thought you would wonder where I am
Rang our number all night long
It's no comfort on the telephone
Ran out and caught a midnight flight
Thought a little love would make everything all right
The landlord said you moved away
And left me all your bills to pay
Look out baby, you might have made your move too soon

Left me with a Keno card
This life in Vegas sure ain't hard
I ran it up to about fifty grand
Cashed it in and held it in my hand
That kind of word can get around
And make a lost love come up found
I hear you knocking baby at my door
But you know you ain't living here no more
It's too bad
I think you made your move too soon

I've been from Spain to Tokyo
From Africa to Ohio
I never tried to make the news
I'm just a man who plays the blues
I take my lovin' everywhere
I come back, and they still care you know
One love ahead
One love behind
One in my arms and one on my mind
It's one thing baby
I never make my move too soon

If You Could Read My Mind - Lightfoot
A solid #4 plus a hauntingly good acoustic

Everything I Own - David Gates

Shattered
Like a windowpane
Broken by a stone
Each tiny piece of me lies alone

And scattered
Far beyond repair
All my shiny dreams
Just lying there

I'm broken, but I'm laughing
It's the sound of falling glass
I hope that you won't mind if I should cry,
In public, while I wait for this to pass

'Cause sweet darling I'm shattered
Into fragments cold and gray
Sweep the pieces all away
Then no one will ever know how much it mattered
Something deep inside of me
Shattered

Well...I woul'd exactly go out and buy it...saw it on TOTP when I was
12
Is TOTP still going? I have very fond memories of watching it before
coming to Canada in '66.....all that music, man it sure was great to be
around it at that time!
Nah - it was killed off about the time iPods came out and everyone
stopped buying singles. It really started dying during the rep/house
era though - no-one was writing songs, just either spacing out at
130bpm or shouting at each other.

No room in either style of music for a variety show like TOTP.

Anyone wnat to help with my
typology?

Bean - have you ever tried doing Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game"? I bet
you would do a killer version!

She Left Me For Jesus

She left me for Jesus and I don't think it's fair
She says that he's perfect - how can I compare
She says I should find him, then I'd know peace at last
But if I find Jesus, I'm kickin' his ass
