Group,

I'd like to get a D-16 type of guitar, but with a gloss finish all around.

Does Martin make this, or is there a Taylor equiv (solid construction and
gloss all around)?

Thanks

You didn't mention the obvious, price. If your interest in the
Martin D-16, is partially because of the sound and quality vs
price aspect, there is hope. I have seen a number of dealers who
have special ordered the -16 with a full gloss finish. I don't
recall exactly which ones, but FQMS and Shoreline are likely
suspects.

If price isn't an overriding issue, Martin makes lots of nice
full gloss guitars, for instance, the D-18.

In addition to Ralph's advice you could look for the SP-16 series of Martin.

The SP models are full gloss (nitro laquer) with striped ebony fingerboard and
bridge, abalone rosettes and modified snowflake inlays on the fingerboard and
wings of the bridge. Single tortoise binding front & back. Like all 16 models
they have scalloped X braces and mortise & tenon neck joints with "A-frame"
bracing above the soundhole

Only the SPJC-16RE (cutaway jumbo, spruce/roswood, 1 3/4" nut, Fishman Stereo
Blender $2659 list w/c) and the SPD-16K & SPD-16K2 (spruce/koa and koa/koa
dreads) are in production now, but since their introduction in 1996/7, Martin
made lots of "SP" models, in many different woods (mahogany, rosewood, maple,
walnut and koa, off the top of my head) in dread, 000, jumbo and OM sizes, some
with cutways and electronics. As in all Martin models 15 or higher, they are
solid top, back sides and necks. Ought to be a few used models out there.

The new, as-yet un-named current nitro lacquer 16 series all share the same
features: Multiple binding top and back, cutaway, abalone rosette and active
electronics. The electronics range from Fishman Thinline Gold Plus, Schertler
Blue Stick to Fishman's newest Prefix Blender Premium, a dual souce upgrade of
the Prefix Stereo Blender (mic mounted on a gooseneck) with a chromatic tuner
built in.
The newer 16 gloss models are 6 in number:
OMC-16E - sapele "OM" (with TLGP or Schertler $2200, w/ "Premium" $2299)
OMC-16WE -walnut (priced as above)
OMC-16RE - rosewood ($2400 w/ Schertler or TLGP. $2499 w/ Premium)
JC-16WE - walnut "Jumbo" ( $2250 w/ TLGP or Schertler, $2350 w/ Premium)
DC-16E - sapele "dread" (priced as sapele OM above)
DC-16RE -rosewood dread (priced as rosewood OM above)

Most of the new models above utilize Micarta for fingerboard and bridge, but of
late, some are using striped ebony - an "undocumented feature"
