Hi there,

I am looking for a little advice.. I tried a Durango b-46 in a store, and
really enjoyed playing it. It felt much more 'together' than anything else I
tried under about 500 bucks. The only thing that concerned me was that is
seemed a little light on the bass side of the spectrum. Do any of you have
experience with this? Does the bass 'open up' over time?

My other question, what do you people think about buying a guitar like this
on the internet. THe store wants list price, and it costs about 100 bucks
less if I buy it from the internet. Is it a safe way to buy? Is the risk of
getting a 'dud' too high?

Thanks for your responses,

best,

Wuntun

Wuntun,

I had a B46 for a while. I bought it after reading a review in
Acoustic Guitar Magazine. The reviewer raved about it so I took a
shot. Here're my quick answers to your questions....

The B46 I had was a VERY good guitar for the price. I bought it for
$150, beating the price increase that followed that review. I was
very happy with it: it had good (but not great) bass, good volume and
projection, and the fit and finish was very, very good. At this price
point, even with subsequent price increases, it's an outstanding
bargain, but you're not going to get everything.

Buying off the net (I did) is a safe way to go IF the seller offers a
trial period. 2-3 days is usual, although some offer significantly
more time to try out the guitar. You'll have to eat shipping both
ways, but that seems to be a small price to pay.

I've always wondered about the consistency of these guitars. The
reviewer got a good one; so did I. Let us know how yours works out.

By the way, I've bought several Blueridges from Centsible Sounds and
found them to be good folks to deal with. I believe they also carry
Durangos. I have no relatinship with them, other than that of a
satisfied customer.

Hope this helps......

That's not the way I remember it....

Anyway, back to the original question, I'd say not to worry about
getting one online. One of the original good reviews of this guitar
was in Acoustic Guitar: http://tinyurl.com/36ep84

The magazine still uses the guitar for doing amp reviews, etc.

Personally I wouldn't but a guitar that I hadn't played, but quite a few
of the posters here have had some very good buys on the net.

Well Here I am 10 plus years later and I've had the Durango refretted once, frets reworked once and I'll do it again when the time comes. When I asked the Luthier if he knew what I liked so much about it he said, "probably that deep bass note" lol He nailed it. I quit trying out guitars after I picked this one up. Got it new for 179.99 out the door. I've put more into than its likely worth to anyone other than me. I hope the B-46 lasts as long as I and finds another player someday to appreciate its character!
